Step three of “Dave” 0
With the hat complete and the value range set I have continued to shade the face. Since this is a portrait from a low resolution photo and the picture will accommodate a less detailed overall appearance, the eyes are not as important as they are in most of my portraits. I can get away with less detail here because the hat has eliminated the highlights that are almost always in eyes, and the subject has naturally dark irises. The remainder of the face is completed with basic shading softened with a brush blending technique where I purposely “go outside the lines” to soften the overall drawing. Soon I will move onto shading the coat and medals with layers of graphite.
